Evaluation of Waste Management in Hospitals- Impact on health and environment
Summary:
The objective of this project was to examine the Management of Dangerous Medical Waste in hospitals, a subject that constitutes accentuated problem, not only in Greece but also in a world level.
The aim of this work was to demonstrate the problem, presenting -through a research- what precisely happens today and what would be supposed to become according to the Greek and European legislation.
The completed management of Dangerous Medical Waste includes:
The recognition of waste
The separation of waste
The protection and the safety of workers and public and the environment
The processes of collection, packing, labeling, storage, transport of waste
The methods of treatment so their final disposal is biologically not dangerous and friendly to the environment.
The research takes place in two hospitals of the capital of Greece, Athens, (one public and one of private right), via a questionnaire which was deposited with a filled application in each unit. From the analysis of results, we have an evaluation of how contagious waste, in big hospitals, are managed until their final treatment.
As it appears in this research, the Greek reality has to demonstrates lacks, insufficiency and improvisation. For the total confrontation, a line of strict meters, education of personnel, application of current legislation and supporting structures, are required, so at some time the final disposal of waste will be environmentally acceptable and safe.
