Strategies for enhancing the vocabulary of first year junior high school students in modern Greek language course
Summary:
Vocabulary is an essential component of a language and an essential area for its effective conquest. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of some vocabulary learning strategies that we have used in designing the two lessons we have conducted in the Modern Greek language course in order to determine whether they contribute to enhancing students' vocabulary wealth and whether they retain the new vocabulary in their memory. This research focuses mainly on the receptive and productive use of vocabulary by pupils through contextualised and decontextualised activities, which were based on the adoption of these strategies. At the same time, pupils' attitudes and perceptions of the effectiveness of the strategies for the receptive and the productive use of vocabulary as well as the the way the vocabulary was taught at the school were explored. The survey was conducted in the first year of the junior high school, which consisted of 20 students. As a source of data collection, the pre-tests and post-tests were provided to students before and after each teaching intervention, their written responses and interviews. The data were analyzed through the SPSS statistical program as well as by thematic analysis. The results of the research have shown to a great extent the important contribution of the strategies to the enhancement of the vocabulary knowledge of the students, mainly on the receptive use of the vocabulary in both contextualised and decontextualised activities, while also highlighting important issues regarding the way of learning and teaching the vocabulary to school.
