Legal framework for protection of coastal ecosystems (protection of morphology, accessibility and permissible uses)
Summary:
Coasts are an important field for various economic and recreational activities, while they moreover are a natural resource of particular ecological and aesthetic significance, which is consumable- as all the environmental goods are. As Greece is characterized by insularity and an extensive coastline, the protection of the natural environment also implies the protection of the coastline as an indispensable part of it. For this reason, coasts are considered as fragile ecosystems only susceptible to mild uses, while accessibility for all is considered as a major issue. Nowadays, sustainable coastal management is required because both human interventions and climate change provoke coastal erosion and sea level rise. Legislation on environmental licensing, as well as legislation on coasts and beaches, assisted by modern international and European legal texts and tools aiming at an integrated and planned coastal management, define sustainable coastal development, by taking into account possible threats to coastal ecosystems.
