The ethical issue of Involuntary Parenthood
Summary:
The thesis addresses the subject of involuntary parenthood through a revised concept of parenting. Given that this approach barely has any institutional recognition, it is considered whether and under which conditions it can be legally introduced. In the first instance, a modern definition of parental status and the delimitation of parental rights and responsibilities are sought, as the foundation of the latter on the current accounts of parenthood is rejected. On the contrary, two legal principles, equality and exclusivity, are considered to be normatively important, in the light of compliance and consistent application of which it is examined the potential legal introduction of involuntary parenthood. In conclusion, it is accepted that, insofar as it does not cause any harm to agent’s rights, a right to involuntary parenthood is possible to be recognized and institutionalized.
