Singularity in Jacques Derrida's and Hans-George Gadamer's thought
Summary:
In this dissertation a dialogue between thehermeneutic philosophy of German philosopher H.G.Gadamerand the current of deconstruction of French-Algerian philosopher Jacques Derrida is attempted. The context, in which this dialogue ismeditated on, has to do with the apply of the Law and especially with the way of making a decision. Apropos Gadamer’s hermeneutic approach, the way the understanding takes place from the interpreteris investigated. Specifically, the prepossessions are investigated as the ground of the process of understanding the contextually under judgment situation and if these are in Gadamer’s thought the necessary precondition which make the hermeneutic circle begin. Furthermore, how whole prepossessions and the law, which compose the interpreter’s hermeneutic horizon, are concretized by under judgment situation and drive to a singular judgment, is investigated. Consequently, objections-questions, which arise from the deconstructive way of reading, are mentioned. Explicitly, reservations are expressed in regard to the role that prepossessions have as fundamental condition and to if they can compose a hermeneutic horizon as precondition of the understanding process. At the end, the dialogue is focused to the inability singularity’s total conception.
