Nikos Kazantzakis in schoolbooks: teaching techniques of his texts
Summary:
Nikos Kazantzakis is one of the most prominent Greek prose writers and his works continue to raise concern and have a profound emotional effect on the readers of all ages, due to his rich work and cosmopolitanism. The intense autobiographical element combined with his travel experiences and his philosophical ideas create a unique result which can attract and at the same time benefit numerous readers. For this reason, various works of the Cretan writer are used for the needs of teaching at all levels of education. However, with regard to secondary education in particular, its presence in school textbooks is largely inadequate, as various factors such as the limited topics of the written samples and the use of its idiomatic language, prevent teachers from taking advantage of all aspects of the “canvassing” work and at the same time deprive young pupils of the opportunity to come to contact with his personality and ideas. The excerpts which are included in the secondary school textbooks derive mainly from two specific works and there seems to be an impression that they are not adequate for students to become familiar, up to some extent, with Nikos Kazantzakis and his work. In order to achieve this goal, the role of teaching techniques are emphasized and therefore can serve as a valuable tool available to the teacher. With project work and the dramatization method, students are given the opportunity to develop their critical ability in an interactive, collective context. The present work focuses on the necessity, presentation and use of this critical educational tool. While implementing these teaching techniques, which are designed to respond to the modern reality experienced by young learners, the teacher has the ability to go beyond the narrow boundaries of school textbooks and encourage the students to cultivate new skills. Consequently, students can acquire skills that, together with the content of Kazantzakis work, will be a valuable ally in their adult lives and justify the fundamental principles of the educational process. Kazantzakis’ corpus is a literary and philosophical entity that responds to the educational needs of our time. It is possible that under the appropriate guidance from the teacher, the classroom will work on the well-organized samples of the Cretan author’s work, in order to promote its universal values. Incorporating all these, the critical spirit and the dynamics of collective and cooperative work sustain an element that imparts and ultimately justifies the educational act presented. It is understandable that if Kazantzakis’example is used as an educational model for the teaching of literature at schools, it can go beyond its original purpose and affect the teaching of literature in the classrooms more widely since it is presented through cross-thematic approaches and the use of other literary texts.
