Modern flows of minors immigrants/refugees in Greece. Case study of unaccompanied minors in the safe area of the G.R.C. at the Ritsona Refugee Center.
Summary:
Greece has ofen been faced with refugee and immigration issues. However, the recent refugee crisis has led to a huge migrant/refugee wave to the country itself, especially in two consecutive years, 2015 and 2016. Thus, Greece has turned into an entrance immigrant country and nowadays consists a dominant transit country to other E.U. members or a permanent settlement.
In the current paper we will be attempting to analyse the immigrant issue in Greece, based on certain theoretical approaches and within the global context. It is worth mentioning that the intensity of the phenomenon under question is quite revealin as, according to the U.N. 60 million refugees and internally displaced people were recorded worldwide in 2014.
Refugge/immigrant children have always been part of refugee/immigrant flows, so they cannot be disregarded. Yet only recently they have begun to receive more specialized attention.
Immigrant/refugee children research is faced with certain methodological problems. That is why an analysis of the phenomenon and a categorization os such children is being attempted in the current paper in order to facilitate their study. Immigration of minors in Greece has become more and more evident during the recent years of the refugee crisis. It is noteworth that a significant percentage of them are unaccompanied minors.
In our paper, the dangers and the special problems of immigrant/refugee children are being discussed, both in general and specifically in our country. At the same time, the anticipated protection of such children and its implementation by the Greek State will be studied.
Also, information on the protection and treatment of minors in our country will be provided, while we will be trying to highlight the accommodation and protection of unaccompanied minors, being the most crucial group of immigrant/refugee children
For the above reason, a qualitative research has been conducted, in the safe zone of the Hellenic Red Cross, housed at the Ritsonas Refugee Hosting Center. In this zone unaccompanied boys aged 14-17 are accomodate. Our research consists of sixteen semi-structured interviews, by these children. The research questions relate to the decision to flee, the help they received, the journey and what they met there, the difficulties they experienced and the situation they faced when they arrived in Greece.
