Summary:
The aim of this paper is to investigate the knowledge of candidate teachers about the modern Greek spelling. It is a fact that a great deal of research has been carried out today concerning the field of spelling and in particular spelling mistakes. Their findings tell us about a lot of mistakes in the words of so-called historical spelling, which makes it easy to understand why it's happening, since we write inappropriately with what we say, while others tell us about the mistakes made in other areas, morphology, phonology, etc. However, our research, following a new categorization, which includes two distinct categories; historical spelling and the spelling of the loans words, highlights along with the others the mistakes made in the words of foreign borrowing, which will not should have been made if you considered the clear regulations of school grammar.
The sample of the survey consists of the first and fourth year students of the Primary Education Departments of the Universities of Athens and Patras. What has been found is that students are not sufficiently aware of the rules of their compulsory education, nor would it be an exaggeration if they are supported that the majority ignores them altogether. However, there is a significant improvement in a specific group of students in our sample.
Finally, through the analysis of our data, we prove that by systematically teaching the regulations governing the spelling of the Modern Greek it is possible to substantially reduce the spelling mistakes.
