Phenotype of Atrial Fibrillation in Patients suffering from Hypertansion
Summary:
INTRODUCTION: Some of the most recent data indicate that there is a high risk of the appearance of atrial fibrillation in hypertensive patients, while the same disease is blameful for cardiovascular mortality and strokes.
AIM: The main purpose of this study was to catalogue both the clinical and the laboratory characteristics of the patients suffering from atrial fibrillation and hypertension and also to show up the ordinary clinical phenotypes of these patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: There were examined 2380 patients (50,3% men, 31,3% obese and 73,7% with uncontrolled hypertension) who visited the Hypertension Department of the first University Clinic of the Ippokration Hospital. At first, we recorded the clinical data of our study ,included those of the Body Mass Index (BMI) , the waist perimeter and the blood pressure and then was conducted a normal laboratory and ultrasound examination.
RESULTS: There was recorded a total of 92 incidents of atrial fibrillation, 31 of which were recognized as persistent atrial fibrillation and the rest of them appeared the paroxysmal type of the disease. Hypertension patients with known cardiovascular disease experienced atrial fibrillation at 18.7% compared to 9.5% who did not develop atrial fibrillation. Diabetics had 18.5% atrial fibrillation, chronic renal disease patients 19.6%. Smoking does not seem to affect the appearance of atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation patients were older and more often obese. History of cardiovascular disease was more common in patients with atrial fibrillation. The finding is that patients with atrial fibrillation had lower blood pressure levels and had more frequent hypertension.
Patients with atrial fibrillation had larger left vaginal dimensions and left ventricular mass index. They also had worse renal function.

CONCLUSIONS: To conclude, the risk factors which should be taken seriously under consideration. The presence of atrial fibrillation is accompanied by a more unfavorable cardiovascular profile including older age, obesity, more chronic hypertension, more chronic hypertension, more frequent left ventricular hypertrophy and worse kidney function.
