Experiences and perceptions of parents and preteens for new technologies in family environment
Summary:
The diffusion of technology in our everyday life and the extensive access of children to new technology devices in the family environment raises a variety of questions and concerns about the development of New Generation. Pre-teen age, as a culturally constructed developmental period, suggests the transition of children to adolescence and thus the adoption of attitudes and behaviors of independency, decision-making and the development of reflective capacity. This paper seeks to illustrate the experiences and perceptions of pre-adolescents about the use of devices in the family environment in relation to the experiences and perceptions of their mothers. The ultimate goal of the present paper is to investigate the informed action and meaning of New Technology in the family environment by children and mothers thmeselves in the light of socio-cultural approach. Regarding the theoretical background of Sociology of Childhood, a closer understanding of children'voice, as the new age users of New Technology, was sought beyond the emerging Moral Panic of our time for virtual reality. The survey data was gathered through the semi-structured individual interviews and six pairs of pre-teens and theirs mothers participated through two Interview protocols. The findings of the survey outline a childhood reality in which the use of technology is considered as necessary and often imperative, being a major factor in both entertainment and communication for family members. This situation often highlighted both the negative and adaptive attitudes of the parents towards the modern mediated reality of children. Among the findings, not only common but also opposite meanings are found between parental and pre-adolescent experiences, which inform parents' mediating practices. The present study also aims to outline the dynamic shifts that the integration of new technology into the Greek household motivates in relation to the expectations from their children and, as a result, from the New Generation.
