Greek Identity, self-esteem and school performance of adolescent immigrants: A longitudinal research
Summary:
Immigration has become nowadays a social phenomenon and the research studies referring to the reasons and most importantly the consequences of this cultural mobility are increasing. In the present study we focus on a very specific consequence of the immigration movement, keeping our interest on Greek identity. To be more specific we hypothesised that the gender predicts self-esteem and school performance, cross-sectionally and longitudinally, which we found to be true only for school performance cross-sectionally. Moreover, we hypothesised that immigrant generation predicts self-esteem and school performance cross-sectionally and longitudinally, which we found to be true only for school performance, but not for self-esteem. Our third research hypothesis was that national identity will predict self-esteem and school performance cross-sectionally and longitudinally, with the results showed that it does not contribute significantly in any of the two dependent variables. To conclude, as our last research hypothesis we set that the interaction between immigrant generation and gender will predict self-esteem and school performance cross-sectionally and longitudinally, a hypothesis that was not significant for any of our dependent variable, neither cross-sectionally, nor longitudinally. Our findings will be discussed based on the existing bibliography.
