Summary:
Adolescence is an important transitory stage that lies between childhood and adult life. It is considered as a stage of intense changes both at a physical and at a psychosocial level. The aim of this research was to investigate adolescent students’ perceptions regarding their school climate and their psychosocial adaptation. The survey involved 283 high school and lyceum students from schools in the area of Athens. For the purposes of this study participants completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and the School Climate Assessment Questionnaire of the Georgia State Department, as it was translated by the School Psychology Laboratory of the Department of Psychology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The survey indicated some differences between boys and girls and between younger and older adolescents in relation with emotional disturbance factors and behavioral problems, as well as most of the factors of the school climate. Finally, an effort was made to predict psychosocial adaptation using demographic variables and school climate factors. The findings are discussed taking into consideration the contemporary literature and their contribution to the development of prevention and intervention programs in the school community.
