The application of 3D printers in the anatomy course in Schools of Health Sciences
Summary:
The technology of 3D printing (3DP), which allows fast production of original models, has emerged in recent years in many different disciplines. The 3D printer is characterized by precision and low cost, which enables its use in various fields such as clothing, aerospace manufacturing, medicine and industrial design. Recently, an interest for 3DP has sparked not only in medicine, but in other branches of health sciences as well such as nursing, dentistry and more. Using 3DP, imaging data can be turned into physical objects swiftly, which can be used by many different ways. For example, corporeal material shortage, which constitutes a significant obstacle in health science education, has been resolved with the emergence of three-dimensional anatomical models. These specifically constructed objects can be produced by using 3DP. The 3D printer is suitable for creating anatomical models for teaching and training, due to its ability to produce exact 3D physical representations based on a combination of data derived from sources such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized tomography (CT). In education, learning the complex anatomical structures of the human body can be particularly difficult for students. Therefore, 3D representation can be a useful tool for teaching anatomy and training in its applications. However, conventional models are inadequate because they do not display all properties. 3DP can produce very accurate and complex physical models.
