Personality and Political Participation in Adolescence: The Mediating Role of Political Self-efficacy
Summary:
The presence of youth as active citizens has become predominant in the social and political discourse. Adolescent’s civic engagement and political participation come to depend more on their personal characteristics and less on socio-cultural variables in Western democracies. This study is based on empirical data from the Greek contribution to the European program CATCH-EyoU (Horizon, 2020). Its aim was to explore the links between five personality factors to various forms of political participation, as mediated by political self-efficacy. The sample consisted of 551 adolescents. The participants filled in Big Five Inventory (John & Srivastava, 2008) and self-reported scales about political self-efficacy and political participation (Pavlopoulos, Kostoglou, & Motti, in press). In addition to voting intentions, four components of political participation and civic engagement were studied, namely conventional participation (in support of political parties and goals), activism (acts of protest against authorities), online participation (social networks), and volunteering (non-profit actions). Extraversion and Openness to Experiences were found to lead to higher voting intentions, as wells as higher online participation and volunteering. Mediation analyses showed that Agreeableness was related with activism via political self-efficacy. Boys reported higher tendency to engage in conventional and activist activities than girls. No significant relation was found between types of political participation and economic level. Results reveal that factors of personality matter for youth politics, and that personality effects operate on virtually all aspects of political involvement.
