Social interaction through "virtual reality" and forms of internet use in adolescence

The purpose of this research is to study the dysfunctional use of the internet in adolescents, in relation to psychosocial factors and demographic data. Internet use was examined in three different stages of adolescence: Students aged 12 and 15 years old, as well as first-year students aged 18 years old, in a sample of 974 people. The results showed that social anxiety is mostly related to the dysfunctional use of the internet, while the role of maladaptation cognitions was found to be essential. Finally, the hours of internet use as well as adolescents' fear of negative evaluation and social avoidance can be regarded as predictors of dysfunctional use, with mediator factors adolescents' need of belonging and collective self-esteem.
