The proverbial discourse of the Balkan peoples. Themes - Uses - Interpretations - Communication. A contribution to Comparative Folkloristics.
Summary:
The thesis deals with the issues of family relations, wealth and poverty, as these themes emerge through the proverbs of the Balkan peoples (Albanians, Bulgarians, Greeks, Romanians, Serbs and Turks). A total of 5,294 proverbs, which are listed in each Balkan language, are accompanied by a translation in Greek.
The choice of these themes was not accidental. These themes correspond to basic parameters of social formation and everyday life. At the same time, these themes indicate the social universality of this folklore genre, but also the dynamics of its use in a changing social and economic environment. In this context, family, wealth and poverty as economic and social categories complement each other and constitute a privileged field of study of the historical nature of folklore phenomena and their transformation from past to present.
Various methodological approaches such as quantitative research (questionnaires), qualitative research (fieldwork in the form of interviews with Balkan immigrants living in Greece as well as in various parts of the Balkans) and, of course, bibliographic research were used for the dissertation.
Particular emphasis is given to the historical and synchronic approach of the proverbs in the sense of transforming the various phenomena from the past into the present, mainly through the emergence of the various uses of the proverbs by the informants.
Our main goals, therefore, were: (a) The rendering of the Balkan proverbs in Greek and the classification of the material, which in itself is a kind of interpretation; (b) the comparison and the finding of the parallels in order to verify the similarities and the differences and c) the determination of the degree of knowledge of the proverbs by modern informants and the verification of the popular wisdom expressed through the proverbs, which is of course relative and always related to the time, the place and the context in which they are used, as proverbs are not absolute truths.
