The representation of the fatal woman (femme fatale) in the art of symbolism. Social, psychoanalytic, feminist interpretations.
Summary:
Symbolism was one of the most important movements of the late 19th-early 20th century during the so-called "fin de siecle" (the end of the century) or "Belle Epoque" (the beautiful era). One of the most common imagery issues was the fatal woman, the birth of Romanticism, which was widely accepted in Symbolism.Fatal woman is the one who is impressively beautiful, sexually intense, and so seduces every man driving him to destruction or death. Typically persons from mythology or religion were chosen to visualize femme fatale, such as Eve, Salome, Judith and Sphinx. The diploma thesis deals with three axes: the new social position of woman and the association of New Woman and Fatal Woman, Freud's psychoanalytic studies, but also research in general that highlight the inner processes of the human soul and finally the feminist philosophy , in order to make it clear that the patriarchal structured society tried, through this visual motif, to consolidate a particular image of modern woman. Finally, the question of the recruitment of the fatal woman from the art of the 20th century is examined.
