The bond with the mother as an influential factor in adolescents' self-esteem and depression: a longitudinal study
Summary:
The present research examines the relationship between mother adolescent bond and self-esteem and depression during adolescence at a cross-sectional and longitudinal level. The research cases concerned the prediction of self-esteem and depression from the sex of adolescents, from their bond with the mother and from the interaction of sex with the bond with the mother. Based on the review of the bibliography, it was expected that the bond with the mother would predict self-esteem and depression in adolescence. It was also expected that gender and the interaction between mother and sex will also predict self-esteem and depression in adolescence. The sample of the survey, which was conducted in Greece, consisted of 222 teenagers aged 12 to 16.3, of whom 123 were boys and 99 were girls. The psychometric instruments provided to the participants were the parental bonding instrument (PBI-Parker, Tupling & Brown, 1979), the self-esteem scale (Rosenberg, 1965) and the depression scale (DEPS-Salokangas, Poutanen & Stengard, 1995). The results showed that the relationship with the mother significantly predicts the self-esteem and depression of adolescents at a cross-sectional level, and that gender considerably predicts self-esteem and depression at a longitudinal level, with girls showing lower self-esteem and higher depressive symptomatology in c phase with respect to boys. The interaction of sex of adolescents with the bond with the mother does not predict the self-esteem and depression both cross-sectional and longitudinal. Findings are discussed based on the bibliography.
