Special Education Teacher's views on the effectiveness of Social Stories in the development of Pragmatic Skills in children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders
Summary:
The current study aimed to investigate the efficacy of Social Stories intervention on the improvement of the linguistic field of pragmatics, in children with ASD. The views of Special Education Teachers were surveyed. A side goal of this research is the investigation of the knowledge of Special Education Teachers, concerning the basic criteria of the intervention. Another goal is the detection of the factors that contribute in increasing Socials Stories effectiveness. For this purpose, a questionnaire with 36 questions was designed. This questionnaire was sent to 41 Greek Schools (General and Special Εducation Schools). The participants were 101 in total. The results highlight the benefits of this method. Special Education teachers claim, that Social Stories intervention is an effective method which contributes to the improvement of pragmatic skills of children with ASD. Moreover, it is observed that there is a lack of S.Ed. Teacher’s knowledge to construct an adequeate Social Story. The foundings of this research is also confirmed by the literature review and current studies. Recommendations for future research are discussed, with a view to broadening the use of Social Stories, on the field of pragmatics.
