Ηomophony , amphisemy and etymological pattern in Andonis Fostieris poetry
Summary:
The linguistic phenomenon of homophony is related to the linguistic representation of meanings-linguistic forms in the human mind. Homophony, as a feature of natural languages, is directly related to the phenomenon of amphisemy, which describes the attribute of the words to have two meanings. Moreover, homophony is related to the etymological pattern, which is included in the lexical patterns and refers to the collocation of etymologically cognate words that produce similar sound. These three phenomena constitute the topic of the current thesis. We study the extent of their use by choosing as a sample copy the poetic production of eminent Greek poet, belonging to the so-called Generation of the Seventies, Andonis Fostieris, as it has been published during the period 1977-2003. The thesis introduces and analyses new concepts referring to the use of homophony, like homophony in absentia and homophonic encapsulation. The issues mentioned above, along with the fact that there is no vertical analysis of Fostieris’ poetic language at a lexical level and that the field of implementation is a free-verse poetic corpus, constitute the reasons why this thesis is innovative.
