Summary:
The present study refers to a survey conducted during the school year 2017-2018 in two kindergartens in the Greater Athens, which aimed to investigate the attitudes and perceptions of parents regarding the impact of reading books (stories) to their children has on their school readiness.
The survey was conducted on 61 parents of pre-school children (5-6 years old) through a questionnaire. The research questions consisted of the following: (a) what are the parents’ attitudes relating to reading texts to their children, (b) what are their habits related to reading, (c) whether parents believe that the book reading helps their child become ready for school,
(d) whether the parents with one child have different habits from those parents who have more than one child. From the survey results we found that parents play an important role in guiding the cognitive and linguistic development of a young child by supporting and expanding their reading activities. In other words, most parents who read for themselves have a positive attitude towards reading books (stories) to their children, believing that it develops various skills and abilities that help them with their learning skills.
From the above is concluded that home literacy experiences, including reading books, are associated with the development of early skills and ultimately with the acquisition of reading (Senechal et al., 1998).
