Summary:
The struggle between vision and touch is unequal when it comes to the speed and quantity of stimuli each one of them acquire. Vision sees the whole of the object at once, while touch touches gradually one part at a time until the synthesis of the whole is accomplished. This tactile processing is time-consuming, demanding and requires familiarization of tactile exploration and development of tactile perception. As in daily life, image dominates also in education and learning is accomplished mainly through vision. In visual disability the appropriate adjustment of teaching and the appropriate tactile adjustment of educational materials is an inextricable need, concluding at the necessity of prominence of the process of making objects tactile and also the use of tactile and handmade-tactile educational material in organized activities inside preschool classroom.
The aim of this qualitative research is to investigate in what way the process of making an educational material tactile is used and applied into a context of a special preschool education for children with visual disability. The research took place during the school year of 2016-2017, at a special preschool context in Attica region with three (3) special nursery school teachers and four (4) preschool children. The sample was chosen with the method of the convenient and purposeful sampling. The methodological tool of the collection of the data was semi-structured interviews of the special nursery school teachers and structured observations of the organized activities inside the classroom. Data analysis was based on the combination of thematic analysis and content analysis.
Through data analysis is highlighted the need of personal research and suitable in-service training of the special nursery school teachers about the process of making objects tactile. As a consequence, present educational practices as far as the process of making objects tactile in preschool education of children with visual disability will be improved.
