Available learning and educational resources of students in primary school and general self efficacy
Summary:
The Actiotope Model of Giftedness, based on systemic approaches in relationships
among students and the school community, focuses on endogenous and exogenous
resources that mobilize students to act in a manner that their repertoire of actions will
be improved and expanded in school environment. For the evaluation of these
available resources for studying and learning , Ziegler & Baker (2013) developed the
Questionnaire of Educational and Learning Capital (QELC) and distinguished the
resources between the endogenous resources entitled “learning capital” and the
exogenous resources, the “educational capital”. Ten subscales are used to evaluate
five forms of learning capital (organismic, actional, telic, episodic, attentional
resources) and five forms of educational capital (economic, cultural, social,
infrastructural, didactic resources) respectively. In this study the main purpose is to
examine the available resources of students for learning and education, giving
emphasis in the dimensional construction of the QELC and shed light on the possible
relationship with the general self efficacy. The sample consisted from 384 pupils in
4
th, 5th and 6th grade of primary schools from Athens and provinces. Participants were
given the QELC and the General Self Efficacy Scale (Schwarzer & Jerusalem, 1995).
According to results, students perceived that the cultural values of education are the
main resources for their education. In contrast, they mention that in a minor level are
supported from economical resources, probably due to the financial austerity in
Greece. Differentiations are also presented in the available students’ learning and
educational resources in terms of their place of residence, in Athens and provinces.
These findings are discussed in relation to other cross-cultural studies based on the
Actiotope Model of Giftedness giving emphasis on the exploitation of the results in
the Greek Primary Education for the development of the gifted students.
