Summary:
This dissertation was elaborated within the framework of the postgraduate program "History of Greek and Roman Antiquity" and deals with aspects of political life in Arcadia from the beginning of the 5th century until the Battle of Mantineia in 362 BC. However, this is a very difficult task, since the fact that Arcadia was a regional power of the Greek world means that ancient historians have dealt with it mainly when it participated in events that concerned the rest of the Greek world. Moreover, it is no coincidence that the majority of our sources refer to the Arkadian Confederacy of the 4th c. BC, which managed to play a decisive role during short period of its existence. However, even in this case -which we have more information- the questions that arise are several and of course thorny, so it makes sense that if the sources are even less, the problems in our effort to outline reality will also grow if not in geometrical at least in numerical progress. However, despite the lack of adequate evidence of political life in Arcadia, as described above, many studies have been published for that particular period of time attempting to answer a number of questions. Nevertheless, only a few of them focus solely on the political life of the Arcadian states, studying their constitutions and various political changes. In fact, as many times as this has been attempted, there has been a tendency to associate them with their development in the rest of Greece - the influence of which is indisputable - but this has meant that the necessary emphasis has not been placed on the forces within Arcadia that could cause political changes. How these forces emerged is also one of the main purposes of this dissertation. Therefore, with this paper we believe that it is possible to reassess the results of the various studies, to confirm or to reject previous findings, and to propose reconsideration of things - in addition, the creation of original maps was used – aspiring, through of the above process, to give a more complete picture of Arcadia's political life, adding a bit to the promotion of knowledge on these issues and - if possible - to be a part of the most recent bibliography.
