"Social acceptance and friendship of children in the classroom: Factors determining the position of a child in a group of peers "
Summary:
The friendly relationships and social position that each child occupies within the peer group is crucial for cognitive, emotional and social development and development. However, there are factors that affect the degree of popularity of each child and the number of friends rallies around it. Thus, various social groups with different traits arise, and more specifically, the popular, the discarded, the simply ignored and the cliques arise.
The indices studied individually and collectively in this survey compared to the sociometric status were stereotypes and prejudices, school performance, expectations and rumors from the group, the family context and the degree of social skills.
The sample was a 19-grade class group of 19 students, and the research was implemented in an Athens school. The tools used were a teacher's questionnaire, sociometric test, and Social Skills Assessment Questionnaire (SSRS-C).
The results of the research have shown that high school performance has a twofold interpretation. Specifically, usually the most popular ones have even higher school performance, but sometimes high performance can lead to a competitive spirit and rejection of what marks it. Ugly rumors spread to a student and negative anticipated expectations take the form of self-fulfilling prophecies, and thus affect the student's status. Stereotypes against children who are differentiated lead to prejudices and the rejection of those who do not resemble other members of the group. Dysfunctional family environments and conflicting relationships between parents and / or between parents and children lead to a corresponding way of interacting with children's social relationships, resulting in rejection as desirable companions. Finally, with regard to the degree of social skills held by each student, those with a low level of social skills are ranked low in the social hierarchy of the class.
