Measuring the trait emotional intelligence of Greek teachers/tutors of primary and secondary education
Summary:
Emotional Intelligence is a composite concept that attracts the interest of researchers because of its practical and realistic applications and benefits in formal but also informal education in school or workplace. In particular, teachers with advanced emotional intelligence skills are significantly affecting the development of their pupils since they are acting as role models. In order to do so, they are constantly trying and achieving to create a positive environment inside the classroom while improving the academic performance of the pupils by motivating and creating a fundamental social network between students. At the same time they are able to perform all the above in a stressful environment which requires mental resilience but compensated by professional satisfaction.
Therefore, the exploration of emotional characteristics of teachers is of great importance. Teachers are the ones that carry the heavy burden of children’s emotional education an alignment and have significant impact in their future education and to students as human beings. Carl Rogers in particular has underlined the role of teachers as individuals that can create a positive learning framework for their students and facilitate learning processes by having an honest, trustful and conscious stance towards their students by knowing how to accept their own feelings and in turn discovering and the feelings of their students while helping the later to express those feelings.
In this scheme, the purpose of the present empirical research is to examine the emotional intelligence of Greek teachers/tutors of primary and secondary education.
The results can and should be reclaimed in the creation of new educational programs for students or active teachers/tutors. The goal would be to enhance their emotional intelligence. In parallel it would be an opportunity for further research in the subject of emotional intelligence in education.
