Summary:
The purpose of this study was to identify the main factors which contribute to the effectiveness of the mental health promotion programs whose aim is the development of social skills. In particular, the role of duration, the content and the type of programs was examined based on the level of intervention as well as the role of coordinators and the manual in the effectiveness of universal-type programs in social skills. The method of systematic review was used. A bibliographic search was made on the electronic databases ‘’Pub Med’’, ‘’Scopus’’, ‘’WilsonOmnifile’’, and the search engine which is called ‘’Google Scholar’’. A total of nineteen studies whose publication date starts from 2007 up to 2017, was included in the results of the research. The results showed that the duration of the programs appears to be associated with the type of approach ("bottom-up"," top-down"), proving that the "bottom -up’’ programs tend to take longer in order to demonstrate some sort of results in social skills. The multi-component programs tend to be more effective in comparison to the single-component ones. In addition, the programs appear to be effective when coordinated by the educators. It is likely that their effectiveness be linked to the educators' ability in classroom management. Findings regarding the role of the content of the programs and the use of the manual could not be identified. Finally, the results above fail to lead to safe conclusions due to the limitations of the research and the heterogeneity of studies. The role of duration, the approach and the type of the mental health programs based on the level of intervention as well as the role of the educators’ skills towards the effectiveness of the programs/interventions in social skills need to be further investigated.
