Original Title:
Η Άλγεβρα ως μέθοδος επίλυσης προβλημάτων: Το βιβλίο IV των Αριθμητικών του Διόφαντου.
Translated title:
Algebra as a problem solving method: The book IV of Diophantus' Arithmetica
Summary:
Diophantus’ Arithmetica (about 250 AD) is the only preserved evidence of higher Algebra in ancient times. Diophantus’ work which consists of solved problems can be characterized as algebraic due to a) the naming of the unknown quantities, b) the operations performed on the named quantities and c) the establishment of an equation. This paper work is the presentation of the book IV of Arithmetica, which consists of 40 solved problems. Each one problem has been analyzed and in each one are stated the naming methods, the operations made and the final equation, showing that Diophantus followed a specific method, Algebra.
