Teachers' misconceptions and difficulties in increasing and decreasing of percentages and in the concept of percentage.
Summary:
Percentages can be met in the curriculum of various courses at all levels of education, as well as in many situations of everyday life. However, surveys have highlighted adults' difficulties and misconceptions not only in the concept of the percentage, but also when it comes to increases and decreases in percents. However, there is a lack of surveys that examine similar misconceptions of teachers who are asked to teach percentages. Therefore, the present study aims to examine the difficulties and misunderstandings of future primary school teachers in situations that include increase and decrease of percentages and in the concept of the percentage in general. 100 undergraduate students of the Department of Primary Education of Athens participated in the survey. The students responded to a questionnaire which consisted of two percent problems. The results of the survey indicate that students can solve problems with standard methods in an adequate way. However, the overwhelming majority of students don't seem to understand the deeper aspects of the percentages. Students had more difficulties when dealing with questions that require a deeper understanding of percentages rather than just use of standard methods. Increased difficulties have been observed in the problem of increasing and decreasing of percentages due to the inability of students to perceive the relationship of percentages with a reference quantity that changes
