Family relations, self-esteem and children's and adolescents of low socieconomic status mental health problems
Summary:
The main aim of the present study was to examine the behavioral and emotional problems of children and adolescents of low socio-economic status, in relation to their self-esteem and family functioning. A lot of studies claim that functional family relationships and self-esteem can protect children and adolescents at risk of economic deprivation. A sample of 54 children and adolescents aged 9-17 years was studied, who were getting support from the Social Centers of SOS Children’s Villages. Family functioning was assessed by using the Family Assessment Device (General Functioning Scale), self-esteem by using the Rosenberg’s Self-esteem Scale and mental health of children and adolescents by using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Results support the protective function of self-esteem in children and adolescents facing socioeconomic disadvantage. The mediating role of family functioning was not supported by the results of the present study. The findings and the clinical implications of this study are discussed, especially in terms of implementation of preventive programs, aiming at reducing the mental health problems of children and adolescents, by reinforcing their self-esteem.
