The negotiations between Greece - FYROM and the Prespa agreement in the Greek daily online press for the period 17/05/2018 - 25/06/2018
Summary:
This diploma thesis aims at analyzing how the Greek online press managed the negotiation period and the final agreement of the Prespa between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. After the veto of the Greek government against the accession of Macedonia to NATO in 2008, the rigid attitude of former Prime Minister Gruevski was followed, which left the Macedonian issue open. In 2017, Zoran Zaev's election to the prime minister was the beginning of a change in the attitude of FYROM, which set as its strategic objective the accession of his country to the EU and NATO. Since the beginning of 2018, intense mobility has begun with the immediate involvement of Matthew Nimetz, the background but also the public support of efforts by almost all the governments of Europe and the United States, which led to the signing of the final agreement between Greece and Northern Macedonia. As expected, the Macedonian issue remains high on the agenda of news websites, despite the fact that important domestic issues, e.g. economy, unemployment, immigration, etc., are competing for the attention of media. The press plays an important role in shaping public opinion on bilateral negotiations and the final agreement. The results of the survey have shown to a great extent that even on a national issue, the websites have almost been approached in political terms.
