Summary:
Introduction: The prevalence of sleep quality and sleepiness in undergraduate students has not been well studied. In this study their prevalence was evaluated in undergraduate nursing students
Methods: Undergraduate nursing students of Sparta University were enrolled in our study. A questionnaire with basic demographics, daily habits, past medical history and Epworth Sleepiness and Pittsburgh sleep quality scales was completed
Results: 167 students participated. 48% scored more than 10 in Epworth and 64.1% more than 5 in Pittsburgh scale. 89.1% of smokers had bad sleep quality compared with 61.5% of non smokers (p=0.039, OR 0.195 95% 0.06 – 0.57 95%CI). Students with bronchial asthma had worse sleep quality (p=0.039). 62% of normal BMI students, 77.6% of overweight and 100% of obese students had also bad sleep quality (p for trend .72 p=0,005)
Conclusions: Students had increased sleepiness and bad sleep quality. Sleep quality is worse in students with asthma, raised BMI and smoking.
