Digital Storytelling and its Application to People with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
Summary:
Digital storytelling is a powerful means of expressing and transmitting feelings and therefore it is increasingly gaining ground in various scientific fields. Furthermore, it appears that it has potential to be applied in the mental health sector (De Vecchi et al. 2017; Cohen et al., 2015).
The aim of the present master’s thesis is to study, through a seminar which was conducted, the effect of digital storytelling on people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as well as to investigate whether it could serve as a complementary process alongside their regular treatment. Additionally, it is examined the improvement of their digital literacy, especially regarding video editing tools which were taught during the seminar.
The results from the qualitative research were particularly encouraging as it was proved that the whole process had a positive effect on the externalization of the feelings of the participants and the development of empathy among them while there has also been improvement concerning their digital literacy skills.
Digital storytelling may possibly be integrated as a process alongside group psychotherapy considering the positive effect that it had to the participants as well as given their suggestions during the seminar.
