The role of experiential learning in the creation, development and cohesion of the community within the classroom in primary education
Summary:
Experiential learning is a holistic way of approaching knowledge, in which the conquest of the latter happens through the transformation of experience. Therefore, its construction in the classroom is based on the social interactions of its members. In this sense, it can contribute to the development of social relations and the transformation of the class into a cohesive community of people exhibiting common experiences. The present master thesis investigates the role of experiential learning in the creation, development and cohesion of the community within the classroom of primary education. The study was preceded by a bibliographic review of experiential learning, the community and the relationship between them within the classroom. The research method applied in this thesis, is that of ‘action – research’. Within this framework, an educational intervention was designed and implemented, based on the principles and didactic practices of experiential approach, aiming to cultivate a community sphere among twenty-three children of the second grade in primary school. To collect data the following were considered: (i) calendar reports of the teacher/researcher during the intervention, (ii) reflection texts of the pupils, (iii) the sociometric test, (iv) interviews in focus groups and (v) a questionnaire. With respect to the questionnaire, it was based on two existing research tools, to measure the community sentiment and explore the interpersonal relationships between the pupils. The results of the research have shown that experiential learning has helped to improve the interpersonal relationships and the development of the community; however the cohesion of the latter has not been achieved.
