Unemployment and Emerging Adulthood
Summary:
The aim of this research is to examine how unemployed young people respond to, and cope with unemployment during the context of the emerging adulthood period. Thus, a qualitative research was designed and comprised of demographic
questionnaires and semi – structured interviews with individuals aged 18 – 25 years who were were selected through purposeful random sampling (n = 18). Through thematic analysis, six main themes were identified, along with a number of sub – themes. The six main themes were: 1) Factors that affect the process of professional identity formation, 2) The experience of unemployment, 3) Personal autonomy, 4) Unemployment and identity, 5) Management practices and unemployment and 6) Thoughts on unemployment. The study draws mainly from the theoretical and epistemological perspectives of phenomenology. In addition, a correlation between the existing theory and the findings of the study is presented. Finally, advantages, disadvantages of the study and proposals for future research are also discussed.
