The exploration of the relationship between parental psychological control and adolescents’ self-esteem and depressive symptoms
Summary:
The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between maternal and paternal psychological control and adolescents’ self-esteem and depressive symptoms. We also investigated gender differences in the relationship between those variables. Specifically, the following research questions were formulated and investigated: a) whether perceived psychological control constitutes a risk factor for adolescents’ mental health, b) whether the role of self-esteem is mediating in the relationship between psychological control and depressive symptoms, c) whether there are differences in the levels of perceived psychological control and adolescents’ gender and d) whether the effect of psychological control on mental health is additive when both parents are perceived as psychological controlling. The sample consisted of 321 Greek teenagers, students of the 8th Grade from secondary schools in the greater prefecture of Attica. The psychological control scale—youth self report (PCSYSR; Barber, 1996) assessed psychological control. Adolescents’ self-esteem was assessed using Rosenberg (1965) Self-Esteem Questionnaire and depressive symptoms were assessed using the Depression Scale (Salokangas, Poutanen, & Stengard, 1995). The results indicated that maternal and paternal psychological control is associated with self- esteem and depressive symptoms. Specifically, psychological control was negatively associated with self-esteem and positively related to depressive symptomatology. Self-esteem was predicted by maternal psychological control. Depressive symptoms were predicted by gender, maternal psychological control and the interaction between maternal and paternal psychological control. In addition, gender differences in the level of depressive symptoms were observed, with the girls reporting higher scores, while gender differences were not statistically significant regarding self-esteem level. Self- esteem mediated the relation between psychological control and depressive symptoms for girls only. The level of perceived psychological control appeared to be the same for both parents, boys, however, reported higher scores on paternal psychological control scale in comparison to girls. Finally, the results showed that teenagers develop lower self-esteem when both parents are perceived as psychological controlling, while the use of psychological control from one parent only is linked to higher scores of depressive symptoms. Those results highlight the need to implement intervention programs within the family, to raise awareness regarding effective parenting practices in order to promote adolescents’ mental health.
