Intergenerational Poverty Transmission Between Three Generations: The Case of Kalavrita
Summary:
Poverty has been characterized as an intertemporal phenomenon and at the same time topical and modern on a global scale. It is often associated with deprivation and deficiency, while the risk of childhood perpetuation is significant, as it has been found to be passed on intergenerationally. The intergenerational transmission of poverty therefore affects the formation of the classes that composes a society and, consequently, its social stratification. The term of social class in Greece is given specific dimensions and is analyzed according to the social context.
The phenomenon under study, the intergenerational transmission of poverty, is interpreted and analyzed as a vicious circle with concepts that possess interrelationships and interdependence. Key causative mechanisms of poverty transfer and incineration in this circle are family and education institutions. The first one transmits the economic and cultural capital, which are also the intergenerationally transferred factors of their prosperity. If the abovementioned funds are at a low level, the intergenerational transfer of the deficit is discussed. Secondary causative mechanism for the phenomenon is also recommended by education, which functions reproductively adapted to the culture of the upper social classes.
In order to make the intergenerational transmission of poverty measurable or even to be appreciated, the indicator of intergenerational social mobility is often exploited with individual key axes, educational and occupational mobility. According to the above, it was attempted to investigate the phenomenon of the intergenerational transmission of the deficit in the wider region of Kalavrita. Intergenerational social mobility of sixty-five people, residents of Kalavrita, and their families over three generations, was studied, in order to finally establish the existence or not of the intergenerational transfer of the deficit.
