The "signification" of the caregiver in care towards a patient with cancer
This master thesis is concerned with a qualitative research with informal caregivers of cancer patients. Its purpose is to examinate how they experience cancer disease of their relative and how is the experience of caring during the treatments and hospitalizations of the patient. Although the caregiver of a cancer patient is the one who assumes both immediate and practical needs and also the patient's unseen personal needs, he is also the one who usually remains "out of the box" and outside of interest and without care of his needs. The aim of the research was to deepen the research material and to gain a deeper understanding of the caregivers' experience. The thematic axes, on which the semi-structured interviews were conducted, resulted after four pilot interviews conducted with caregivers of cancer patients who were hospitalized at the St. Savvas Cancer Hospital. In these interviews, the caregiver's speech was geared towards some key thematic axes and regarding whether cancer care is a process of renegotiating issues from the personal history of caregivers and whether it is important in this process the influence of the reality of the illness, the body image of the patient, the physical care-contact, the perception of pain, the relations of power, the knowledge of the truth about the disease and the function of a "third".The results of the survey confirmed the renegotiating nature of care in relation to the issues which are mentioned above and highlighted as a very important issue the previous experience of caregivers with cancer disease having another role,a particular relationship of some with the concept of care and also the universal assumption of the role of care by women caregivers in this research, with the loud absence of participation by male carergivers.
