Summary:
This master thesis falls under the Epistemology of Measurement. The Epistemology of Measurement focuses on the practice of measurement and its historical, social and material aspects. The aim of this field is to study the relations between measurement and knowledge. Do measurement procedures produce genuine knowledge?
The thesis is comprised of two sections. In the first section, the main philosophical views regarding measurement are reviewed. In the second section, the standardization of electrical units and standards from 1860 to 1912 is presented and analyzed from the epistemology of measurement point of view. The analysis shows how a series of standardization processes gave rise to an accurate and coherent system of electrical units.
