Summary:
School bullying is a multidimensional social phenomenon with alarming and harmful consequences in children’s psychological-emotional growth and their learning procedure. It has specific features such as deliberate, unprovoked, systematic and repetitive violence aimed at imposing and provoking physical and mental pain on students deriving from their classmates, in the context of a relationship characterized by power disproportion, inside and outside school. In this situation we have the perpetrators, the children who intimidate, the victims and the observers, who are present or know what is happening. School bullying is distinguished in various forms, such as direct intimidation (physical and verbal), indirect intimidation (emotional and psychological), sexual, racist, via internet. It is now imperative to establish a clear framework for preventing and addressing the phenomenon of school bullying.
The role of the school nowadays has changed, the teacher has as his main concern the teaching and the assimilation of new knowledge, as well as, the response to the particular needs of the students. This is why it is imperative that the teacher should co-operate with other specialties in order to fully implement his educational work. One of these specialties is the social worker, whose aim is to evaluate, prevent and manage the problems that arise in the school context.
The role of the school social worker is multidimensional. She is the link between school, family and other social institutions and focuses on the child and his particular needs. She collaborates systematically with the families of the students, seeking the positive attitude of the family towards the student's difficulties and the development of healthy inter-family relationships.
The case study presented in this master thesis describes an incident of school bullying between two students of a Primary School of the Municipality of Acharne, as well as the interventions carried out by the social worker in cooperation with the educational staff, in order to address the phenomenon.
