Flipped Classroom and Geography: A case study in 5th Grade
Summary:
The model of Flipped Classroom, as an innovative instructional approach leveraging the use of ICT, is being increasingly implemented in modern educational era, aiming at the improvement of student engagement and learning. Up to date, relevant studies on limited subjects, referring mostly to secondary and higher education, argue for its general positive impact on student perceptions and performance. However, a number of challenges are also addressed. The purpose of this case study is to investigate the impact of Flipped Classroom on 18 fifth graders’ opinions for the subject of Geography and their attitudes towards technology. Quantitative and qualitative data were gathered through pre and post attitude and perception questionnaires, student and teacher journals, classroom observation protocols, Edmodo activity and pre and post semi-structured interviews with five of the students. The implementation of Flipped Classroom yielded a slightly positive to neutral impact on students’ attitudes towards technology. Research findings also suggest that the majority of students expressed positive opinions for most of the aspects of their learning experience, though not significantly higher than for their traditional constructivist method of learning Geography. Ensuring student participation and motivation for interactions out of class along with technical issues were identified as the biggest challenges for implementing the flipped model of instruction.
