From the Treaty of Varkiza to the 1946 National Elections: society and politics in the athenian press

The present postgraduate thesis is a study on the social and political aspects pertaining to the lifestyle of the Greek people spanning over a period of thirteen and a half months - from the signature of the Treaty of Varkiza (also known as the Varkiza Pact or the Varkiza Peace Agreement) until the first post-war elections, which were conducted on the 31st of March, 1946 - using the Press of that specific period as its main resource. Initially, it seeks to clarify the perplexing nature underlying the relationship between the Press and the science of History. Next, it examines the historical backdrop of the era under investigation. Then, it analyses the living conditions that were dominant during the first months after the signature of the Treaty of Varkiza, i.e. from mid-February until the end of August 1945. Finally, it sheds light to the parameters that have led to the polarization of the Greek society during the time the country was preparing for the elections of the 31st of March, 1946.
