Summary:
This paper elaborates the topic of intercultural education and the promotion of this through the tale. Since the multiculturalism of modern societies is now given, it becomes clear that acceptance of diversity should be universal. For this reason, the school as a social institution is invited to assist in the cultivation of cross-cultural awareness and promote in every way the acceptance of foreign students. Important educational tool in this challenge is literature. Although literature is not a separate subject in the Elementary School Curriculum, it is a powerful weapon of modern education in its quest to promote intercultural education through school and culture. Its cross-cultural value is so great that modern scholars refer to the term "intercultural literature”, the utilization of which appears to have significant benefits in today’s education. As a kind of traditional folk literature, the tale seems to be a very useful tool for cultivating cross-cultural consciousness among students of all ages. The present study examined the tale of Cinderella in several Greek and foreign national variants, while some comments are given about some observed patterns with great symbolic value. A proposed educational material occupies the last part of the paper, which is based on the fairy tale of Cinderella and the comparative approach of several variants. The ultimate goal is the promotion of reading engagement but also the cultivation of intercultural awareness in children of 3rd grade. Finally, they are being proposed various creative activities that serve these two important purposes mentioned above.
