Cultural routes in the island of Ikaria

Cultural routes as part of alternative tourism, represent an ideal tool of mild management, concerning the cultural heritage of a place. Ikaria, an island with a special character, culture and environment, is considered as an ideal case for creating cultural routes, which will lead to the promotion and management of the cultural property on the island. The proposed cultural routes were created, considering the specificity of the island and its inhabitants, but also the needs of the visitors. The cultural routes project the Ikarian society, a society of self-sufficiency and solidarity, the traditional techniques of the island and the traditional products, the natural environment and the architectural remains of human activity from ancient times until today. The development of cultural tourism, through the creation of cultural routes, is going to give a solution to major problems, such as the desertification of mountain settlements and environmental degradation. It also leads to the awareness of the inhabitants, in matters relating to environmental protection, antiquities and rural monuments of the island. Lastly, the cultural routes contribute to lengthening the tourist season, to the development of the local community and to creating opportunities for the young people of the island.
