Problems in the acquisition of the adjectives ending in -is
Summary:
This study has attempted to detect in the students’ writings of the 6th grade of Elementary school if there are any problems in the acquisition of the adjectives ending in –is, as well as the causes of these problems. In order to identify these problems and their causes, the results of an experiment conducted in two schools were analyzed. At the same time, the relevant literature was made good use of. A test was constructed and given to 60 students attending the last grade of Elementary school whose mother tongue was Greek. They were asked to form third declension and double-ending adjectives ending in -is, to accent them, to choose the right adjective and to integrate it correctly in a sentence. They were also asked to formulate the correct type of adjectives ending in –is in concomitance with nouns, as well as to fill in the correct type of neuter gender of these adjectives. The tests were corrected by the researcher and the students’ mistakes were then measured by exercise and by type. The researcher analyzed the numerical data using Excel graphs and found out that students tend to form adjectives ending in –is according to the prototypical adjectives ending in –os and that they similarly accent the neuter proparoxytone adjectives in the singular. The conclusions of our research say that repetition as well as linguistic maturation of the students certainly enhance the degree of comprehension and acquisition of this formal conjugation.
