ABSTRACT

The existence of medical tourism in Greece


In this master thesis, we study the alternative special form of tourism and particularly the form of medical tourism.
In medical tourism, tourists participate in private medical care programs, for therapeutic, relieving and rejuvenating reasons.
In the first chapter, there is an introduction of the concept of tourism. The definitions that are given vary as concerns this concept, so a historical retrospective from antiquity till today will be done.
In the second chapter, the broader categories of tourism are presented, their essential elements and some characteristics of tourists. Then, the tourism sector will be analyzed.
In the third chapter, the alternative special form of tourism and its essential elements are presented as well as at the main form of tourism.
In the fourth chapter, we have a presentation of medical tourism in Greece and which is part of the broader category of alternative special tourism that requires the existence of modern medical centers.
In addition, it must be mentioned the fact that tourists who choose our country to spend their holidays, combine and enjoy the provided medical services. These services are undoubtedly of a high standard, and the relationship with their service cost is significantly low, referring to their place of origin.
In the fifth chapter a presentation of medical tourism in countries of the European Union is done. More specifically the offer issued by directions by the European Union is presented, concerning the cross-border care, which sets a new safe frame work for patients’ rights who want to have access to safe and good quality treatment across the borders of the European Union as well as the reimbursement of expenses. Also, some countries from the European Union that have shown a remarkable medical tourism activity are indicatively mentioned, such as the countries of Central, Western and Eastern Europe.
Finally, in the sixth chapter the final conclusions will be mentioned/ will be drawn about the case of alternative tourism – medical tourism.
In the seventh chapter the bibliography of this work/ master thesis is presented.
