Depression and anxiety in patients with spinal cord injuries
Summary:
Introduction: Spinal cord injuries consist a medically complicated condition as they may affect various aspects of patient life. They may also lead to either total or partial alteration of both kinetic and aesthetic function in addition to a potential autonomous nervous system disorder.The aim of this study is investigate depression and anxiety in adults with spinal cord injuries and to compare them with healthy controls.
Method: A total of 60 adults participatedin the study: 30 patients with spinal cord injuries and 30 healthy controls. Depression and anxiety were assessed according to Beck Depression Inventoty and Beck Anxiety Inventory, as well as with Hospital Anxiety and Depression. Visual Analog Scale was used for the assessment of pain in patients with spinalcord injuries.
Results: Patients with spinal cord injuries present statistically significantly higher mean depression and anxiety than healthy controls. Furthermore, within the patient’s group demographic factors ( such as marital status and educational level) are not statistically significantly associated with depression and anxiety.
Conclusions: The recognition of psychological factors can contribute to the improvement of spinal cord injuries patients’ care.
