GENDER AND EDUCATION

Τhis paper includes a bibliographic review of the main sources of educational inequalities, focusing on gender discrimination. It is noted that the basic causes which create these inequalities are social origin, religious beliefs, ethnicity and gender. The main sources seem to be the stereotypes that are diffused in society for the "other" person, the association of biological and social gender, and the reproduction of patriarchal perceptions in modern society. In addition, the paper provides an extensive reference to theories of women’s discrimination, as well as a recapitulation of the woman's position over time. It is also referred in the history of women's education, the relationship between women and housework, employment, leadership as well as the obstacles they face in their professional development and economic independence.
Additionally, in this thesis, a survey was conducted on the detection of gender stereotypes in children who attend the primary school from 3rd to 6th grade and children who attend all junior high school classes. After the statistical processing of the answers given, it was shown that some of the stereotypes were confirmed, while others were not widespread approved or were overruled. Following, a teaching proposal is presented for Sociology for the 3rd grade of junior high school in order to confront gender stereotypes. Finally, some suggestions for future research are made on the basis of the conclusions.
