The effectiveness of Manual Therapy in patients with Cervical Radiculopathy. A systematic review
Summary:
Introduction:
The term Cervical Radiculopathy describes a pathology regarding the irritation of the neural tissue in the cervical area that results in regional pain and general pain in the upper limb, as well as symptoms related with paresthesia and muscle weakness. 1
The related structural changes in the affected area usually occur due to disc herniation, osteophytes, tensile strength or nerve impingement at the level of the spinal hiatus or the neighboring structures. The general degenerative processes occurring in the area are potentially related to the origin of the pathology.
Epidemiologically the pathology appears to affect different age groups with a peak in the age group of 40-50 years.2,3
This pathology is a matter of concern to health professionals because of their particular characteristics and the disability that characterizes their patients.
In order to describe the role of Physiotherapy in Cervical radiculopathy, we will conduct a systematic review of the literature to detect clinical evidence and evidence related to the provision of rehabilitation interventions in this particular population.
Methodology:
The methodology we followed is in line with the Prisma Guidelines. The publications that are included in this review are published in reputable scientific journals and are written in English. The studies were evaluated for their credibility with the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool, the CEBM critical appraisal tool and the CASP tool for cohort studies.
Results:
Based on the findings of the studies, Manual Therapy appears to reduce pain and improve function, thus bettering the quality of life of patients with Cervical radiculopathy. The intervention seems to have a very positive effect, in all measurements with varying measurement tools for pain and function.
Conclusion: Although no treatment model has been developed for patients with Cervical radiculopathy, Manual Therapy interventions have shown effectiveness in reducing pain levels and increasing function. Future randomized controlled studies are definitely necessary for the development of clear and effective protocols for AP treatment.
