Parental involvement, parental attributions of child's achievement and students' school achievement of 5th and 6th grade of elementary school.
Summary:
The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between three basic variables: Parental attributions of their child’s achievement, parental involvement in their child’s educational process and the child’s actual school achievement. The parents of 105 fifth and sixth grade students (92 mothers and 13 fathers) and 6 teachers participated in the study. One parent of each child completed one questionnaire regarding their degree of involvement in their child’s life at home and at school and one questionnaire about their attributions of their child’s achievement. It was found that certain attributions that parents make about their child’s achievement are related to the type of their involvement. For example, the child's effort and to the influence exercised by the teacher is positively related to the control of the child's school and extra-curricular behavior by the parents. Attributing achievement to child’s lack of effort was positively related to three types of parental involvement: preparing for the next day and parental concern when the child is out of the house, parent's attachment and over-protection as well as stress and anxiety for better performance. Actual child achievement was related to both parental attributions and involvement. Variables such as parental pressure for better school achievements, intense anxiety and tendency to control school and extra-curricular behavior of the child, attributing achievement to heredity, to teacher’s effort and to child’s lack of effort were negatively correlated to actual achievement. Finally, the degree of parental involvement and of parental attributions of child’s achievement was found to vary according to gender, age and education of parents.
